Rosalie is a well known character in the area, who has been making ceramics in her studio for many years.

Some of you may have them in the garden not knowing where they have come from.

The Garden

In 1970 we started to develop Rosalies Retreat from a bare hay paddock.
Our first job was to remove the huge Macrocarpas that had been planted as a shelter belt, and replace them with NZ natives. We then planted dozens of Maples and Cassonias.

As time went on the pongas and other natives self seeded every where giving us great shade. So we took advantage of the shade and planted dozens of small and large flowering Vireyas, many of which are scented. some are now very large.

We feed wood pigeons, tuis and goldfinches, and in fact, there can be 9 different species of birds all bathing together and all getting on extremely well in the stone bird bath.

The Gardener

I am 72, and don’t keep great health, but am doing something I have always been interested in. Gardening has always had to fit it in between milking and raising children. I am now living my dream. For the last eleven years I have been making pottery in my studio which I love, and it works so well with the garden. I have people who come to the garden, wander around and after seeing the ornaments and their settings buy them. Many come back to buy a second time.
