The Garden

The Waihi Waterlily Gardens have captivated imaginations, stimulated senses and provided enchanting water garden experiences for more than fifty years. Visitors from every corner of the globe have left footprints beneath giant flora, on grassy knolls, and next to the natural waterways that run through this magnificent fifteen acre property. Many return to nourish the seeds they'd planted during past visits: the seeds of fond memories.

Beautifully mature trees, rolling topography, and a lake fed by a gently meandering stream set the framework for the Waihi Waterlily Gardens. The ponds, more than twenty in all, are rich with splashes of yellow, red, white, blue, pink, peach and cream; waterlilies delicate on the surface. Broad, rolling areas of lush green grass are segmented by clusters of ponds, giant trees and natural waterways. There's a 'wow' factor round every bend. Canopied by giant oaks, liriodendrons, maples, liquid ambers, meta sequoias and swamp cyprus', water is transported over a ford and down a tall step before heading through a trail of native New Zealand Flora; including rimu, kahikatea, lancewood, miro and kauri. After exiting the bush, past cascading water, past the gingko trees and the copper beech, the gardens open to an expansive 2 acre lake, overlooked by a weeping willow and surrounded by giant flora.

The Gardener

Olivia, Sam, Alix and Beven purchased the Waihi Waterlily Gardens in 2004 and closed for three years to restore the property. After an intensive hands-on approach, the environment was reopened to the public for the 2007-08 summer season. Now, approaching the fourth season of operation, they're once again looking forward to sharing this 'enchanting and magical' environment with visitors from across the globe.
