The Garden

The hotel was built on a five-acre residential city block for the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games with another wing added a decade later. Located opposite the city’s iconic Hagley Park, the site had a wealth of mature deciduous trees, many of which remain, contributing to the English character of the gardens. Several trees are listed heritage/notable trees, including oak, ash, lime, may tens and southern magnolia.

Over the years the Chateau’s gardeners have developed the grounds, creating a variety of appealing areas including the formal Rose Garden, rich with rhododendrons, camellias, annuals and large elms; the tranquil Gazebo garden with native tree ferns, hydrangeas and rhododendrons beneath a canopy of chestnut and native trees; a vineyard and a herb garden among others.

The Gardener

Each gardener has added their own stamp in the on going development of the grounds at the Chateau. Our current gardener continues with this, adding to the plant palette and building on the informal, naturalistic character of the grounds, while aiming to enhance the existing plantings.
