The Garden

The gardens at Upton Oaks have been developed over many years and been created to harmonise with the style of the 1911 Victorian Villa.

Upon purchase of the property in 1987 the villa was in a dilapidated state and there was little evidence left of any gardens. However there was a wonderful old walnut tree and we had a vision to restore the villa. Amongst renovations we also started to create a garden.

Today the garden consists of separate garden rooms, with the use of different hedges and brick walls defining these. A large formal 17th century style knot garden divided into different colour sections, sunny perennial borders and pond, water garden in the pool area plus large raised vegetable beds and espaliered fruit trees on brick walls. A small olive grove opens into the new addition of the blue and white wedding garden with a French styled, iron gazebo as the central feature.

Upton Oaks garden has graced the pages of numerous magazines plus television screens and is visited by many national and international groups each year.

The Gardener

Dave & Sue have developed Upton Oaks gardens over 20 years and though we have no formal training, we both have a eye for detail and had a desire to create a garden harmonising with our old villa, on what was a very neglected site. Dave specialises in maintaining the lawns and keeping the numerous hedges sharp and defined, while Sue does the design, planting and care of the gardens. It has been written that 'a pair of romantics live here' and this reflects on the type of garden we have created, a romantic country garden. The garden will continue to evolve and mature in the years ahead.
