The Garden

Pukeiti is a 360 hectare rain forest property located between Mount Egmont/Taranaki and the scenic west coast, just south of New Plymouth.Established in 1951, these beautiful gardens are an easy walk along mostly grassed tracks.

Gardens at Pukeiti do not consist of just one type of plant or species. A woodland garden has been created around the genus Rhododendron and more than 2000 different specimens are now grown. Rhododendron species from wild sources take pride of place but just as many of the man-made hybrids flaunt themselves during the long flowering season. The collection also includes the sub-tropical Vireyas which are protected from heavy rain and cold by display houses and covered walks in a naturalistic style. The plant collection is augmented by other tree and shrub genra, including magnolia, pieris, prunus, styrax, camellia, deutzia, daphne and many more for all-year-round interest. Plantings of natives also represent a full range of species and hybrids to illustrate their versatility in the garden. Many thousands of bulbs and herbaceous plants add to the collective picture and none more so than the stately giant lilies, Cardiocrinum giganteum, that flower in their hundreds at Christmas time.

There are four main walks that are set out at Pukeiti. This is done to direct visitors to the areas of the gardens that have the most on offer at that time of year.
