The Garden

Peace and tranquility only 25 minutes from Auckland
" A little bit of paradise"

Willows Reach Lodge started as five acres of paddocks, a creek and a hole in the ground by the house where there had been a horse dressage arena
The first construction was to dig the hole bigger and put in a small lake which fulfilled Geoff's dream of having water close to the house. You can now wander around the lake visit the fairy dell, see the tranquil view of the jetty through the willows and cross the boardwalk to the lawn.
Next the dry stone walls and stone entranceway were built by a Scottish crofter which created spaces for gardens and gave Willows Reach the feel of England.
The entranceway has a wildflower garden which is at its best in October and November. This leads to a driveway which has an avenue of liquid ambers which look particularly spectacular in autumn.
At the top of the driveway is the smallest goldfish pond which features our naked lady fountain. The maples on the edge are repeated throughout our beautiful gardens. Alongside is a stand of silver birches under planted with spring bulbs.
The trellis fence has camellias in the bays and three large Taiwanese cherry trees in front which the tuis and rosellas fight over the nectar in spring.
From here you enter the garden to the luxury home stay which has another glade of silver birches and on the other side maples, sun loving shrubs and perennials.
The retreat haven garden is enclosed by stone walls entered through an archway covered by the rose Vielchanbleu and a pink clematis. There is a cottage garden one side and one of the three ferneries on the other.
A long arbour covered in roses, wisteria and other climbers takes you by the orchard to the stables where you can see exotic poultry the donkeys and llamas.
Down by the creek is a wonderful boat shed, featuring recycled kauri doors and a sash window, where you can watch the waterfowl cruise by. There is a lovely stand of ferns under the twisted willows one side and a woodland of silver birches the other. Geoff has made a table from the kauri doors where you can sit and read a book or enjoy a glass of wine.

The Gardener

Geoff is a New Zealander born in Wellington and travelled to the UK in his 20's where his love of old farm buildings started. Jenny was born into a farming family in Devon England and came to New Zealand in 1976. Our heritages have a great influence on the gardens around the property with the use of New Zealand natives and ferns and then the old fashioned roses, cottage and wildflower gardens. All the rustic structures around Willows Reach have been built by Geoff he prefers to be a creator rather than a maintainer!! We both enjoy tracking down the old timber used in the buildings which fits in well with our philosophy in recycling. Geoff also mows all the lawns and paddocks but now it a dab hand at pruning roses and helps out digging the holes to plant trees. This has been the first time that Jenny has planned out new gardens which has been very exciting and rewarding. We have created a peaceful environment where we can live with our birds and animals and now share with others who love gardens. We are both involved in the local community Geoff is the Chairman of the Kumeu Coast and Country Promotions group and Jenny is on the committee. Jenny is also a volunteer at the Kumeu Information centre.
