The Garden

Wrights Watergardens surround the Mauku Waterfall, Stream and rock quarry. The gardens are on several levels where numerous pathways, bridges and ponds lead you to surprise after surprise. Unique growing situations are found in this one garden due to the huge rock face and abundant water. Over 80 varieties of waterlilies and exotic lotus cover the ponds during the summer months where thousands of flowers create a magical kaleidoscope of colour. Aquatic plants like Japanese Iris, Thalia, Pontederia and Hibiscus are planted close to the ponds. Beyond are plantings of natives and exotic bulbs, perennials, trees and annuals.

The sunny north-facing rock wall is perfect for cactus succulent, aloes and tropical plants while the shady south facing side suits orchids, ferns, palms etc. At the bottom of the waterfall the path leads down to the shady garden and the newly developed Island. This is like a different world to the levels above with the tree ferns, bromeliads, primula, astilbe and other shade loving plants. Not to be missed is the rock garden, the bolder garden, the Balinese Temple and the large wedding lawn. The summer house is the ideal place to sit and relax while viewing the waterfall and the wood pigeons that are garden residents. This is a garden for the nature lover who can't resist all plants. Soak up the health-giving ions from the waterfall or relax and meditate at one of the many secluded quiet locations. Check out the eels and turtles. Don't forget your camera.

The Gardener

Building their Pukekohe gardens 13 years ago as a hobby, owners Malcolm and Dael Wright happily accepted visitors from the very beginning. “We were growing and picking flowers for the export market, and people would come back and ask where all the flowers had gone. So we decided to keep them all for the public,” says Malcolm. “A Chinese guy came once and explained that the zigzagging pattern of the wood is to avoid evil spirits, which travel in a straight line. I just built it that way because I liked it,” laughs Malcolm.
